City of Sanctuary Sheffield

City of Sanctuary Sheffield is an independent charity which works to support refugees and people seeking sanctuary in Sheffield. For the last 18 years they have been working to create lasting change, inspiring a national movement of welcome, and building strong and powerful community in Sheffield.

Practices

They create safe and welcoming spaces in Sheffield, offering an alternative to the hostile environment actively fostered by government policies. These spaces challenge the unjust constraints placed on people seeking sanctuary and reflect a vision of the inclusive, compassionate communities they are working to build.

Their team provides direct support and advice, working collaboratively to effectively signpost individuals to the right services. They help people navigate the UK’s complex and often overwhelming asylum system, ensuring access to support and justice throughout the process.

In addition to frontline support, they advocate for systemic change within the asylum system itself.

They run a free weekly community meal at The Sanctuary in collaboration with Open Kitchen Social Club, as well as a monthly community meal at the Multi-Agency Drop-In.

Regular events are also hosted, recognising the power of food to bring communities together. These often involve partnerships with Open Kitchen Social Club, using surplus food to nourish both body and spirit.

Whenever The Sanctuary is open, visitors are welcome to enjoy a hot drink, and there are often biscuits, fruit, and other food available to create a warm and inclusive atmosphere.
