Sheffield, the proud Steel City, has added another feather to its cap by winning the Sustainable Food Places Silver Award at the end of last year. The recognition is a testament to the city’s dedication to sustainable and ethical food practices. As we revel in this achievement, you are invited to a vibrant celebration to thank those who made it happen, the people of Sheffield. This free event, hosted by ShefFood, promises an evening of food, music, and connections, uniting like-minded individuals passionate about the future of our local food system. However, spaces are limited, so book soon to join.
If you’ve not heard of Sustainable Food Places, you may wonder who they are and why this is such a big deal. The Sustainable Food Places (SFP) network is a UK coalition promoting sustainable food practices. In Sheffield, ShefFood is the local chapter of SFP, coordinating efforts between local businesses, organisations, and anchor institutions such as Sheffield City Council and the universities. ShefFood also presented evidence of the city’s work for the Silver Award submission.
The SFP Awards aim to acknowledge and celebrate communities that take a comprehensive approach to food, resulting in significant positive changes in various food-related issues. In 2021, Sheffield was awarded the Bronze award for remarkable efforts in transforming its food system in recent years, and since then, the sector has gone from strength to strength.
Sheffield’s food system has seen new policies by the local government, hospitals, and universities. Faith organisations, community groups, and social enterprises provide support in times of financial difficulty. Local food production and eco-businesses have expanded, contributing to a healthier planet. And, over 70 new organisations have joined ShefFood’s food partnership in the last year.
ShefFood also helped launch the Sheffield Local Food Action Plan (LFAP) in June 2023. It outlines 73 actionable steps and projects involving almost 100 organisations across Sheffield. The LFAP aims to make Sheffield’s food system fairer, healthier, and greener. These steps will significantly impact the city, covering health, the economy, the environment, food access, and citizenship.
The actions being taken now will have a lasting impact on the food scene in the region, benefiting ordinary people in Sheffield for years to come. While it’s essential to plan for the future, it’s also important to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our city so far. That’s why the Silver Award Party is being held as part of these celebrations.
