Mums United Community Centre
At Mums United, we specialise in helping the most vulnerable young people, women, and groups in Sheffield against rising youth violence and child drug exploitation.
Practices
Our founder, Sahira lived in London with her 2 young children. She saw a lot of knife crime, guns, gangs, drugs so moved back to her home town Sheffield, thinking it was a lot safer. However, when she got here she saw exactly the same. Many young Asian mothers had kids in gangs, doing knife crimes and dealing drugs. These mothers were voiceless and didn’t speak to anyone so, 4-5 years ago, Sahira started Mum’s United in Sharrow and Meersbrook.
Now based on The Wicker, Mum’s United has developed into a community centre, charity shop, youth club and gym. We have an open door policy, allowing anyone to be involved in our community. We run free women-only zumba, yoga and boxing sessions. We also run the same fitness sessions for kids which are free for children aged 8-16 and £2.50 a week or £12.50 a month for anyone over 16.
Other things we do are:
– We raise money and send donations to disaster zones such as Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, and Pakistan.
– On Sundays, we run free parenting courses called Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities
– On Sundays, we also run Breaking the Cycle, a youth centred workshop promoting gender equality to reduce and prevent violence against women and girls
– Help people access benefits
Food related activities are:
– Every Wednesday we run a community meal and have over 25 people coming
– On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, we have a foodbank with fresh, frozen and dried foods. This is through word of mouth and we redistribute surplus food from Tesco via Fareshare.
– We provide lunch for kids through Sunday Youth Club
– In the School holidays we run activities with lunch for kids
– We do food bank referrals
