ShefFood warmly welcomes the news that McDonald’s has officially withdrawn its controversial planning application to open a new drive-thru on London Road. This marks a significant victory for the Sheffield community, thanks to the tireless efforts of local residents, councillors, and MPs who voiced their strong concerns about the proposal.
The planned location, just a short walk from schools and areas where young people regularly gather, raised serious questions about the impact on public health. Sheffield Council’s planning department echoed these concerns, citing evidence that a concentration of fast-food outlets is already contributing to poor health outcomes in the area and that this development would only worsen existing health inequalities.
We’d like to thank Sheffield Central MP Abtisam Mohamed and Sheffield Heeley MP Louise Haigh for listening to their constituents and standing up for the well-being of the local community. We also commend Councillors Ibby Ullah and Nighat Basharat for their persistent campaigning and advocacy, as well as all the members of the public who submitted objects, which numbered 270!
ShefFood believes every planning decision is an opportunity to prioritise health, sustainability, and food justice. Our city faces serious challenges around diet-related ill health and inequality, and we must continue to work together to create a food system that nourishes every Sheffield resident, especially our children.
This decision demonstrates the power of community solidarity and a shared vision for a healthier, fairer Sheffield. Let’s keep building on this momentum.
